Benefits of a Social Media Detox
There are many benefits of a social media detox, or getting rid of social media for a while. These benefits include:
Being more focused and productive: Did you know that the average person in the United States picks up their phone 96 times a day! All of these notifications from social media are shown to distract people from their work flow and can be extremely distracting. Just think, how often do you get distracted when doing your work and end up scrolling social media?
More free time to pursue passions: Remember the two hours and 20 minutes that the average person spends on social media media every day? Just imagine if you utilized that time to pursue other passions. You could try out that hobby or project or sport you have always wanted to start. Regaining two hours and 20 minutes of your life each day will give you so much time to pursue things you care about.
Better sleep: The time you spend using social media and being on your phone at night is a massive disruptor to your sleep. Not only does the blue light from the screens disrupt your natural circadian rhythm, but just using social media can suck you in and keep you up longer and later than you should. I am sure that you have experienced a time where you stayed up way past your bedtime scrolling through social media and you ended up getting less sleep than you should be.
Improving your connections with others: Social media can take away from quality time with loves ones and your friends. Just think of maybe a pet or dog that just wants you to play with them but you are too busy on social media. By taking a break from social media, you will be able to spend more time with those that you care about.
Better mood: Social media and anxiety are feelings linked to a usage of social media because of comparison to others. This is common because everyone on social media only posts the best version of themselves which is unsustainable and unattainable.
Some of these issues that I face are definitely a worse quality of sleep and less productivity. As a teenager, both of these issues really affect my life and a lack of sleep really leads me to always feeling tired. It has also turned into a cycle because less productivity means that I procrastinate my work more, and then stay up later doing my work. Then I proceed to get less sleep because I go to bed later. Being tired just lowers my motivation to do my work which increases my levels of procrastination, starting the whole cycle again. I am going to go step by step along with y’all through a social media detox.
